The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources wants to hear what the public thinks about shale gas drilling in North Carolina. It has already held two hearings on this subject—the third is scheduled for Monday April 2. 75% of North Carolinians support natural gas development and those opposed to drilling are a minority, but they are vocal and well-organized.

It’s essential that North Carolinians who want the jobs and economic growth that shale gas drilling brings submit comments to DENR by April 2.

I am writing to urge DENR to make a favorable report on shale gas drilling. The economic benefits such drilling would bring to the state will be immense, and with the right safeguards there will be no negative environmental impact on North Carolina.

The potential for shale gas development in our state is an exciting opportunity. We can become part of the shale revolution that's occurring in the United States and help supply domestic natural gas that will help both our economic and our energy security. Such developments depend on DENR's report, however, and I hope you will look at the evidence and make a positive recommendation.

As we see in other states with shale gas drilling, there is significant job creation from the natural gas industry and many businesses in the drilling area, such as restaurants and hotels, see their business grow substantially. North Carolina's economy will benefit from the jobs and economic growth that shale gas drilling will bring.

There is opposition to drilling, often founded on rumor and hyperbole.  However, the evidence is clear, that when done correctly shale gas drilling poses no threat to our environment.

I strongly support allowing shale gas drilling in North Carolina and I look forward to DENR's positive recommendation on this matter.
